Sri Lanka Adventures

Sri Lanka offers an exceptional range of adventures within a compact island, where cycling and walking provide a unique way to experience this popular destination.

Lush landscapes, ancient cities and a warm, welcoming culture make it a destination that rewards slow, active travel.

Cycling is one of the best ways to experience Sri Lanka. Quiet backroads wind through tea plantations, rural villages and forested hills, allowing you to move at ground level and connect with everyday life. Rides through the Central Highlands and around Nuwara Eliya combine gentle gradients, cooler temperatures and scenic views, with support that makes these adventures accessible to a wide range of riders.

Cultural exploration adds depth to each adventure. Time in Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa reveals Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist heritage, while iconic sites such as Sigiriya and the cave temples of Dambulla showcase the island’s architectural and spiritual history.

Safaris in Yala National Park offer the chance to see elephants and other native species, while river journeys, coastal landscapes and forest walks reveal Sri Lanka’s ecological diversity.

The best time to travel to Sri Lanka for hiking, trekking and adventure touring is generally Dec–Mar, when temperatures are comfortable and conditions are favourable for exploring landscapes, national parks and cultural highlights.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, typically ranging between 24°C and 32°C (75°F–90°F). Most regions experience distinct wet and dry seasons which influence travel conditions.

Travelling outside the main season can still be rewarding, with quieter trails, seasonal landscapes and unique experiences depending on rainfall, wildlife activity or snow conditions.

Sinhala is Sri Lanka’s official language, and both Sinhala and Tamil are national languages

Sinhala, an Indo-Aryan language, is the mother tongue of Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority. The low-caste Rodiya community uses a distinct dialect of Sinhala called Rodiya

Tamil, a Dravidian-root language, is spoken by Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils and Sri Lankan Moors, with Moors sometimes using a Tamil dialect that is tinged with Arabic

English is commonly used in government and is referred to in the constitution as the link language between Sinhala and Tamil. Approximately 10% of Sri Lankans speak English

Other languages include Arabic, which is used in religious contexts by Sri Lanka’s Muslim community, Sri Lankan Malay and Sri Lankan Portuguese Creole

Sri Lanka’s indigenous Vedda people had their own tongue, Vedda language, which is now thought to be extinct

Passport holders from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America travelling to Sri Lanka for tourism are currently eligible for a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which permits a stay of up to 30 days.

To enter Sri Lanka, you will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. Applications can be completed online via the official Sri Lankan Government website:

Apply here - https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/

We strongly recommend applying for your ETA at least 10–14 days before departure. While applications are typically processed within 24–48 hours, applying well in advance helps avoid any last-minute travel disruptions and provides additional time should further information be required.

Please note that a valid ETA is generally required for foreign travellers to board their flight to Sri Lanka. Although limited facilities are available to obtain an ETA on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo), applying before departure is strongly recommended.

If you plan to stay in Sri Lanka for longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for a visa extension through the relevant Sri Lankan authorities and pay any applicable extension fees.

Important - Visa and entry requirements can change without notice. All travellers are responsible for ensuring they meet current entry requirements and should check the official ETA website for the latest information before departure.
