Uzbekistan Adventures

Uzbekistan adventures follow the legendary Silk Road, tracing the ancient routes that once connected East and West through trade, culture and empire.

From the campaigns of Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan to the rise of Tamerlane, these routes shaped Central Asia’s history and left behind an extraordinary legacy of cities, architecture and living culture.

Travelling through Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, you’ll explore the great oasis cities of the Silk Road. Vaulted domes, towering minarets and intricate tilework define the skyline, from Samarkand’s iconic Registan Square to the preserved walled streets of Khiva.

Beyond the cities, the journey becomes more active. Cycle through contrasting desert and mountain landscapes, moving between remote settlements and open terrain. In the Kyzyl Kum Desert, camp beneath vast, star-filled skies and connect with local communities whose traditions have endured for generations.

Across the country, palaces, mosques and mausoleums offer insight into a civilisation shaped by centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road.

From immersive cultural journeys and comfortable cycling adventures to more challenging treks, World Expeditions’ Uzbekistan adventures are designed to take you beyond the paths less travelled.

The best time to travel to Uzbekistan for hiking, trekking and adventure touring is generally Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct, when temperatures are comfortable and conditions are favourable for exploring landscapes, national parks and cultural highlights.

Uzbekistan has an arid desert climate with hot summers, mild winters and very little rainfall. Temperatures typically range between 15°C and 40°C (59°F–104°F).

Travelling outside the main season can still be rewarding, with quieter trails, seasonal landscapes and unique experiences depending on rainfall, wildlife activity or snow conditions.

Uzbekistan’s official and primary language, Uzbek, belongs to the southeastern or Chagatai branch of the Turkic language family. The Uzbeks were the least Russified of the Turkic peoples formerly part of the Soviet Union, and virtually all still use Uzbek as their primary language.

Following independence from the Soviet Union, Uzbek replaced Russian as the language of education. Russian language skills among Uzbeks have declined greatly since independence, but in a region that is very multilingual, Russian is still the lingua franca of Central Asia.

Basic English is spoken by some students, government officials and by those who work in hotels and other tourism industries.

USD is the best currency to carry in Uzbekistan.

We recommend you bring US Dollars cash only dated no earlier than 2006 (the newer the better) in larger denominations (US$50 & US$100) as your main source of money. ALL notes should be in excellent condition. They should not be torn or have any writing on them. If in doubt ask your bank to supply alternatives.

Credit cards and ATM’s are not as widely accepted in Uzbekistan so it is not recommended to rely on these solely.
