Kyrgyzstan Treks & Tours

Kyrgyzstan is one of Central Asia’s most rewarding destinations for trekking and cultural exploration, where wide mountain landscapes and nomadic traditions remain deeply connected.

Largely untouched by mass tourism, adventures here unfold among the peaks of the Tian Shan, often called the Celestial Mountains.

Trekking routes pass through high valleys, alpine meadows and mountain passes, with vast skies and snowcapped ridgelines shaping each day on the trail. Along the way, life continues much as it has for generations, with seasonal yurt camps, grazing herds and warm hospitality offering insight into Kyrgyz nomadic culture.

Time around Lake Son-Kul and Lake Issyk-Kul reveals a quieter rhythm of travel, where walking and overland exploration allow you to engage closely with both scenery and local life. Journeys are paced to balance physical challenge with cultural connection, making trekking here feel immersive rather than rushed.

For those seeking a more demanding experience, Kyrgyzstan also provides access to some of Central Asia’s great mountain objectives. Treks to Peak Lenin Base Camp introduce travellers to high-altitude environments and glacial terrain, while summit expeditions offer a serious challenge for experienced climbers.

These adventures can be combined with cultural touring across the wider region, including historic Silk Road landscapes.

Explore our Kyrgyzstan treks and tours and discover some of Central Asia’s most exciting paths less travelled.

The best time to travel to Kyrgyzstan for hiking, trekking and adventure touring is generally Jun–Sep, when temperatures are comfortable and conditions are favourable for exploring landscapes, national parks and cultural highlights.

Kyrgyzstan has a mountain-influenced climate where temperatures vary with altitude, typically ranging between 5°C and 25°C (41°F–77°F). Valleys can feel mild while alpine areas remain cooler.

Travelling outside the main season can still be rewarding, with quieter trails, seasonal landscapes and unique experiences depending on rainfall, wildlife activity or snow conditions.

Kyrgyzstan Som

Kyrgyzstan Som is the preferred currency; but US dollars are widely used. The economy is mostly cash-based.

You can withdraw Kyrgyzstan Som from local ATM machines in the major cities only. Credit cards are not widely accepted in Kyrgyzstan so it is not recommended to rely on these solely.

We recommend you bring US Dollars cash dated no earlier than 2000 (the newer the better) in larger denominations (US$50 & US$100) as your main source of money. ALL notes should be in excellent condition. They should not be torn or have any writing on them. If in doubt ask your bank to supply alternatives.
