Useful Australia Info

Australia offers vast desert landscapes, ancient rainforests and dramatic coastlines, with the best regions to explore including Tasmania, the Red Centre, the Great Barrier Reef, the Kimberley and Kakadu.

Tasmania Wilderness: Tasmania’s rugged mountains, temperate rainforest and alpine plateaus offer outstanding trekking on trails such as the Overland Track in Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park.

Red Centre & Uluru: Australia’s Red Centre reveals vast desert landscapes where travellers explore Uluru, Kata Tjuta and ancient cultural sites within Australia’s spiritual heart.

Great Barrier Reef: The Great Barrier Reef stretches along Queensland’s coast where travellers snorkel, dive and explore one of the world’s largest coral reef ecosystems.

Kimberley Region: The remote Kimberley combines dramatic gorges, waterfalls and sandstone ranges explored on walks, boat journeys and wilderness expeditions.

Kakadu National Park: Kakadu’s wetlands, escarpments and ancient rock art sites reveal rich Aboriginal culture and remarkable wildlife.

The best time to travel to Australia for hiking, trekking and adventure touring is generally during spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild across much of the country. In northern Australia and the Red Centre, however, the drier cooler winter months are often the best time for hiking, with comfortable daytime temperatures for exploring desert landscapes, national parks and remote trails.

Australia has a varied climate that ranges from tropical conditions in the north to temperate weather in the south. Temperatures typically range between 5°C and 30°C (41°F–86°F) depending on the region and season, with hotter conditions common in inland desert areas during summer.

Summer brings long daylight hours and vibrant coastal landscapes in southern regions, while winter offers ideal conditions for hiking in the Northern Territory and Australia’s Red Centre, where cooler temperatures and drier conditions make exploring places like Kakadu and Uluru and remote desert trails such as the Larapinta more comfortable.
