10 Pieces - Cleaning Up Wilderness Trails

A Regenerative Travel Initiative

In 2014, World Expeditions became a founding partner of 10 Pieces, a litter collection initiative aimed at encouraging travellers worldwide to make a positive environmental impact by leaving trails cleaner than they found them.

The program focuses on litter "hotspots" along mountain trails and is currently available on treks in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Peru, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan as well as on Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro summit treks. Travellers are provided with a litter collection bag to gather waste along the trails. At the end of each day, the collected litter is responsibly disposed of by the crew.

While "10" may seem like a small number, its impact grows significantly when multiplied by the efforts of an entire group. A group of 12 people can remove 120 pieces of litter in just one day. If another group follows the next day, this number can quickly grow to 240 pieces or more.

In many developing countries, waste disposal options are limited. Traditionally, discarded items such as pottery and bamboo baskets were biodegradable, but with the rise of tourism and modern packaging, non-biodegradable litter has become increasingly common.

By participating in 10 Pieces, travellers lead by example, raising awareness among mountain communities about the harmful effects of litter on tourism, local wildlife, and public health.

Upon arrival at your destination, you will attend a group briefing and be offered the opportunity to sign up for the 10 Pieces initiative. Participation is voluntary, but we encourage action on this global litter problem. Together, we can make a difference.

But there’s more to travel these days. Today, travel also affords us with the opportunity to: - protect the environment - contribute to communities in need - advocate against animal cruelty - take action to protect vulnerable children - support sustainable development and preserve - the world’s many rich and diverse cultures By travelling responsibly, we can return to our lives feeling satisfied that our travels have left a positive impact. World Expeditions has been creating innovative adventure itineraries since 1975. Our commitment to sustainable travel was formed when the company was first established, and today, in the face of a multitude of threats to the environment and societies, our commitment is stronger than ever. Creating genuine sustainable adventure itineraries often translates to real costs, which means that a raft of responsible tourism practises underpins our prices. By integrating these practices into our itineraries we enable our travellers to be ‘responsible travellers’. Conserving environments and cultures takes a united front, which is why we produce this Responsible Travel Guidebook. It’s a reference tool for our travel industry partners, employees and travellers, outlining our company wide initiatives, and it gives guidance to travellers about how to be ‘responsible travellers’.
