Overview

This trek is ideal for those seeking a quieter Everest experience without compromising on big mountain views. If you’ve dreamed of seeing Everest but want to avoid the crowds of the main Base Camp route, this carefully paced itinerary offers the perfect alternative.

With the support of our experienced guides and crew, you’ll walk through Sherpa villages and yak pastures en route to the striking turquoise lakes of the Gokyo Valley. From here, we ascend Gokyo Ri for one of the most expansive views in the Himalaya - with Everest, Cho Oyu and a panorama of 8000-metre giants laid out before you.

Along the way, you'll stay in our exclusive Eco-Comfort Camps, where standing-height tents, off-ground beds, and warm communal dining spaces make for a more enjoyable and restorative journey. These private camps set well away from lodge trails offer added comfort and a stronger connection to the remote landscapes around you.

From our high camp west of Gokyo, we prepare to cross the Renjo La (5,400m / 17,716ft) - a spectacular pass with unforgettable views. The descent to Mirlung takes us along a rarely trodden trail where we’re unlikely to see other trekkers.

With extra acclimatisation days, a supportive team, and a less-travelled route, this is trekking at its best in the Everest region - immersive, scenic and far from the ordinary.

You will be met at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport arrivals gate by a World Expeditions representative and transferred to the Radisson Hotel in a private vehicle. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to relax after your journey or explore the surrounding area at your own pace. A pre-trek briefing will be held at 4:30–5:00 pm, where your guide will outline the journey ahead and organise the distribution of your trekking kit including your kit bag, sleeping bag and down or fibrefill jacket. This evening we gather for a welcome group dinner, providing a great opportunity to meet your fellow travellers before the adventure begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: Nil

Depending on the season, today is either a free day to explore Kathmandu or a road journey to Ramechhap in preparation for your flight to Lukla. If remaining in Kathmandu, you may choose to wander through the lively streets of Thamel, visit historic temples and markets, or explore some of the city’s renowned UNESCO World Heritage sites. During peak trekking seasons, flights to Lukla often operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, requiring a 5-hour drive through rural countryside east of Kathmandu. If this applies to your departure, we travel by road today to position for an early morning flight the following day. Your guide will confirm the final flight arrangements during the pre-trek briefing. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu or Eco-Comfort Camp Ramechhap Note: Domestic flights to/from Lukla during the spring and autumn trekking seasons (March–May and October–December) may operate from Manthali Airport, Ramechhap. This is determined by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal and is subject to change. Your guide will confirm the flight arrangements locally.

Meals: B

We begin the day with an early transfer to the airport for the short flight to the STOL airstrip at Lukla. The 30-minute flight offers wonderful views of the eastern Himalaya before landing at the famous Tenzing–Hillary Airport, originally established by Sir Edmund Hillary to improve access to the Everest region and support the Sherpa communities. On arrival in Lukla, we meet our trekking crew and begin walking into the Khumbu. The trail descends gently toward the Dudh Kosi River, whose name means “Milk River” because of its milky glacial colour as it flows down from the high peaks. The broad, well-marked path winds through fields of potatoes and buckwheat, small villages and rows of colourful dahlia trees, providing a gentle introduction to trekking in the Everest region. We arrive at our first Eco-Comfort Camp at Ghat, set beside the river in a peaceful forested location. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Ghat

Meals: B,L,D

Today we follow the trail along the thundering Dudh Kosi River, whose name means “Milk River” because of its milky glacial colour. Sections of the path wind through pine forest, while open clearings reveal terraced fields and small farms typical of the lower Khumbu. Along the way we encounter donkeys, yaks and dzopko carrying supplies and trekking gear between villages. A dzopko is a yak–cow crossbreed, while the long-haired yak is usually seen at higher elevations. Shortly after leaving camp we cross the Kusum Khola, a tributary of the Dudh Kosi, with views toward Kusum Kanguru (6,369 m / 20,896 ft) at the head of the valley. As we continue, impressive Himalayan peaks begin to appear above the forested ridges including Nupla (5,885 m / 19,308 ft) and Kongde Ri (6,093 m / 19,990 ft). Around a bend in the trail, the striking peak of Thamserku (6,808 m / 22,336 ft) rises dramatically above the valley. Today we also encounter our first mani walls, sacred stone structures carved with the Buddhist mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum,” meaning “Hail to the jewel in the lotus.” According to tradition, these walls and nearby chortens are always passed on the left-hand side. Today’s walk is not long, so take your time and allow your body to acclimatise gradually while enjoying the scenery of the Khumbu. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Monjo

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we cross the turquoise waters of the Dudh Kosi River and enter Sagarmatha National Park, a protected area established to preserve the unique environment of the Everest region. As part of this effort, trekking groups operate with minimal environmental impact, using kerosene and other alternatives to firewood for cooking. Following the river valley, the trail leads to the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and Bhote Kosi rivers where we cross a dramatic suspension bridge draped with prayer flags. From here we begin the steady ascent to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa capital of Nepal. The climb winds through pine forest before reaching a vantage point where we are rewarded with our first glimpse of Mount Everest (8,848 m / 29,032 ft). The trail continues upward to Namche Bazaar, a bustling mountain town set within a natural horseshoe-shaped valley opposite the impressive peak of Kongde Ri (6,093 m / 19,990 ft). After lunch there is time to explore the lively Sherpa markets and Tibetan trading stalls, perhaps searching for a unique souvenir or simply enjoying the atmosphere of this famous Himalayan town. Accommodation: Lodge Namche Bazaar

Meals: B,L,D

Today’s walk begins with a steady climb above Namche Bazaar toward the Syangboche airstrip, before continuing along the ridgeline toward the Everest View Hotel. From here we are rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks including Everest (8,848 m / 29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m / 27,940 ft), Thamserku (6,608 m / 21,680 ft), Khangtega (6,782 m / 22,251 ft) and the striking Ama Dablam (6,812 m / 22,349 ft). After a short break we continue to the village of Khumjung, where we visit Sir Edmund Hillary’s famous “Schoolhouse in the Clouds.” Built in 1961 with the support of the Himalayan Trust, it was the first school established in the Khumbu region. What began as a small two-classroom building has since grown to educate more than 350 students from surrounding Sherpa villages. From Khumjung we descend slightly and follow the trail for about 25 minutes to Kyangjuma, where our Eco-Comfort Camp is set in a beautiful location with sweeping mountain views. For those who prefer a shorter acclimatisation walk, it is possible to trek directly from Namche to Kyangjuma in about 2 hours. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Kyangjuma

Meals: B,L,D

Heading northeast, we initially follow the main trail toward Tengboche, contouring around the hills before branching off on a climb along the flanks of the sacred peak Khumbila (5,761 m / 18,901 ft). The trail traverses across yak pastures as we gradually ascend toward Mong La. Below us lies the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and Imja Khola, while across the valley Tengboche Monastery is beautifully framed by the peaks of Ama Dablam (6,812 m / 22,349 ft) and Khangtega (6,782 m / 22,251 ft). We reach a prayer-flag-draped stupa on a ridge at 3,992 m / 13,097 ft, before descending steeply through forest toward the Dudh Kosi River and our campsite at Phortse Tenga. After afternoon tea there is the option to take a short walk up the ridge beyond camp to the nearby Sherpa village of Phortse. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Phortse Tenga

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we continue north, following the Dudh Kosi River toward its source at the impressive Ngozumpa Glacier. A short climb leads us back onto the trail as we begin a steady ascent toward the Gokyo Valley. Since leaving the main Everest Base Camp route, the trail becomes quieter with far fewer trekkers, giving a real sense of the remoteness and beauty of the upper Khumbu. The path winds through sections of red birch, fir and dwarf rhododendron forest, interspersed with open yak pastures as we gradually gain altitude. Along the way we pass small waterfalls and enjoy views across the valley toward glaciers flowing down from Tawoche (6,495 m / 21,309 ft) and Cholatse (6,440 m / 21,129 ft). Behind us rise the dramatic ridges of Khumbila (5,761 m / 18,901 ft) and numerous unnamed peaks nearing 6,000 metres, while ahead we begin to glimpse Cho Oyu (8,188 m / 26,864 ft) on the Tibetan border. In the distance the elegant peaks of Khangtega and Thamserku dominate the skyline. By late morning we arrive at Dole, a small settlement set high in the valley. The area has even been the location of one of the more famous modern “yeti sightings.” Ask your trek leader for the story and decide for yourself. Accommodation: Lodge Dole

Meals: B,L,D

Continuing our gradual ascent, we follow the valley toward the small settlement of Machhermo, where we stop for lunch. Like many of the villages in this upper valley, Machhermo consists of only a few buildings and is occupied mainly during the warmer months. Families from Khumjung and Khunde own land here and bring their yaks to graze on the high pastures during summer. Today is an important acclimatisation stage as we continue adjusting to the altitude before our ascent of Gokyo Ri (5,483 m / 17,989 ft). The pace remains steady and relaxed to allow our bodies to adapt. During the afternoon you may choose to relax and enjoy the mountain surroundings, or take a short walk up the ridge above the nearby hamlet of Luza for excellent views across the Gokyo Valley. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Machhermo or Lodge Machhermo

Meals: B,L,D

Following the valley high above the river, we begin our steady ascent toward the village of Gokyo. At the small settlement of Pangka we pause to enjoy excellent views of Cholatse (6,440 m / 21,129 ft) rising dramatically above the valley. We are now firmly in high alpine terrain as we approach the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalaya. The trail climbs onto glacial moraine and rocky terrain left behind by the glacier. From here we enjoy striking views of Khangtega (6,782 m / 22,251 ft) to the south and Cho Oyu (8,188 m / 26,864 ft) to the north. After ascending past the snout of the glacier the trail levels out and we reach the first of the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, Longpongo. Continuing onward we pass Taujung Lake, a larger turquoise lake where ducks are sometimes seen swimming in the icy waters during their seasonal migrations. Our path continues up the valley, running parallel to the immense Ngozumpa Glacier, separated from us by its towering lateral moraine. Soon we arrive at the lakeside village of Gokyo, set beside the shimmering waters of Dudh Pokhari. Accommodation: Lodge Gokyo

Meals: B,L,D

An early start gives us the best opportunity to appreciate the scale and beauty of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Today there is a choice of two superb excursions, each offering unforgettable views. One option is to climb Gokyo Ri (5,483 m / 17,989 ft), the classic viewpoint above the Gokyo Lakes. From the summit we enjoy the famous panorama of Everest (8,848 m / 29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m / 27,940 ft), Makalu (8,485 m / 27,838 ft) and Cho Oyu (8,188 m / 26,864 ft), along with many other Himalayan peaks including Gyachung Kang, Cholatse, Tawoche, Khangtega, Thamserku and Lobuche. The turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes far below create one of the most iconic mountain scenes in Nepal. Alternatively, we can follow the trail beside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal, to Ngozumpa Tsho, also known as the Fifth Lake. This less-visited viewpoint offers remarkable perspectives toward the Western Cwm of Everest and the surrounding 8,000-metre peaks. The Fifth Lake is a favourite among locals and provides a quieter, equally spectacular vantage point. The group will decide together which excursion to take today, and whichever option is chosen promises an extraordinary Himalayan experience. Accommodation: Lodge Gokyo

Meals: B,L,D

Today is one of the most exciting and rewarding days of the trek as we cross the Renjo La Pass, one of the high passes of the Everest region. The ascent follows a zigzag trail through rocky terrain and boulder fields as we steadily climb toward the summit of the pass. From the top, we are rewarded with remarkable panoramic views across the Himalaya, including Everest (8,848 m / 29,032 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m / 27,940 ft), Makalu (8,485 m / 27,838 ft) and Cho Oyu (8,188 m / 26,864 ft). Looking back, the turquoise Gokyo Lakes sparkle below, creating one of the most memorable viewpoints in the Khumbu. After time to enjoy the views, we begin a steep descent into a remote northern valley. The landscape gradually takes on the character of the high Tibetan plateau, with wide open valleys and rugged mountain scenery. This route was once an ancient trading trail, used by Tibetan traders travelling south from the Nangpa La Pass between Tibet and Nepal. By afternoon we reach the small settlement of Lungden, where we settle in for the night after an exhilarating day in the high mountains. Accommodation: Lodge Lungden

Meals: B,L,D

Today we turn south and begin descending the valley as we gradually make our way back toward Lukla. The trail follows a beautiful route through a quiet gorge, passing traditional Sherpa villages and terraced fields along the way. Our destination is the historic village of Thame, one of the oldest Sherpa settlements in the Khumbu. The village is renowned for its impressive Thame Monastery, perched above the settlement and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Thame is also the birthplace of several legendary Himalayan climbers. After time to explore the village and monastery, we settle in for the evening and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote Himalayan community. Accommodation: Lodge Thame

Meals: B,L,D

Today we continue our descent through the Khumbu, gradually returning toward the lower valleys. The trail leads us back to Namche Bazaar, where we stop for lunch and have time to explore the lively Sherpa town once more. You may wish to browse the markets for last-minute souvenirs or simply relax with a coffee while enjoying the mountain atmosphere. Leaving Namche, we descend through pine forest toward the Dudh Kosi River, following the trail out of Sagarmatha National Park. By afternoon we arrive at Monjo, where we settle into camp and reflect on a challenging yet deeply rewarding journey through the Everest region. Accommodation: Eco-Comfort Camp Monjo

Meals: B,L,D

Our final trekking day follows the Dudh Kosi Valley back toward Lukla. The trail passes through familiar villages, forests and riverside paths as we retrace our steps toward the airstrip where our journey into the Khumbu first began. Arriving in Lukla, there is a strong sense of achievement after completing this remarkable journey through the high Himalaya. The afternoon provides time to relax and reflect on the experiences of the past days among some of the world’s highest mountains. This evening we gather to celebrate the successful completion of the trek and to thank our trekking crew and porters, many of whom will return to their home villages from here. Accommodation: Lodge Lukla

Meals: B,L,D

We begin the day with a spectacular morning flight from Lukla (2,800 m / 9,186 ft), soaring above forested hillsides, villages and deep river valleys. Depending on seasonal flight operations, we either fly directly to Kathmandu (flight time 35 minutes) or fly to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap (flight time 20 minutes) followed by a drive of 5 hours to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft), you will be transferred to the Radisson Hotel where the remainder of the afternoon is free to relax or enjoy some last-minute sightseeing or shopping. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B

After breakfast, arrangements conclude unless further services have been arranged. Those departing by aircraft will be transferred to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport for their onward flights.
