Useful Ghana Info

Ghana offers vibrant cities, historic coastal forts and rich cultural traditions, with the best regions to explore including Accra, Cape Coast, Kakum National Park, Kumasi and the Volta Region.

Accra: Ghana’s lively capital Accra blends vibrant markets, historic landmarks and contemporary culture where travellers explore Jamestown, Independence Square and the bustling streets of one of West Africa’s most dynamic cities.

Cape Coast & Elmina Castles: Ghana’s historic coast reveals powerful reminders of the transatlantic slave trade at the UNESCO-listed castles of Cape Coast and Elmina.

Kakum National Park: Kakum’s protected rainforest offers wildlife-rich forest trails and the famous canopy walkway suspended high above the jungle.

Kumasi & Ashanti Culture: Kumasi forms the cultural heart of the Ashanti Kingdom where travellers explore royal heritage, traditional crafts and vibrant markets.

Volta Region & Wli Falls: The Volta Region features forested mountains and scenic villages where travellers hike to Wli Falls, the highest waterfall in West Africa.

The best time to travel to Ghana for hiking, cultural exploration and adventure touring is generally November to March, when conditions are drier and more comfortable for exploring forests and coastal regions.

Ghana has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, typically ranging between 24°C and 32°C (75°F–90°F).

During wetter months the landscape becomes lush and vibrant as forests and rivers flourish. Travelling at this time offers dramatic scenery and quieter travel experiences.

Ghanaian Cedi

The local currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). Declare all GHS or other currency when you arrive in Ghana. This covers all forms of currency, not only cash. You can easily exchange US Dollars and Euros for GHS at commercial banks and exchange services. While ATMs are common in large towns, they may not be available in rural areas.

Many hotels, guesthouses and shops accept credit cards except for Mastercard, which is not widely accepted. Check ahead that you can make payment, and have back-up funds. Contact your card issuer before you travel in case they put a block on your account.

Keep your card in sight when paying bills and look closely when you use an ATM in case a skimming device has been attached to it.
