Regenerative 2030

  • Establish two on-site greenhouses for practical natural science learning
  • Provide hands-on environmental education to over 1,200 students
  • Train 20 teachers and school staff in innovative, applied teaching methods
  • Equip students with skills in planting, propagation, and sustainable practices
  • Support the planting of 1,000+ trees and shrubs to green the school environment
  • Improve local air quality and create healthier, more engaging school surrounding

Set in a ger district facing severe air pollution and limited educational resources, the project addresses both environmental and social challenges. It improves student engagement, builds practical skills, and contributes to healthier school surroundings by planting over 1,000 trees and shrubs annually, fostering a stronger connection between young people, their community, and the natural environment.

This project is focused on improving the learning environment at Amgalan Complex School by creating green spaces and providing students with hands-on experiences in natural sciences. The budget will be allocated to several key areas, starting with a kick-off meeting with the school administration and teachers to ensure alignment on goals and expectations. Additionally, a one-day training session will be held for the school staff to enhance their teaching methods and help them engage students more effectively in the project. To facilitate practical learning, two greenhouses will be purchased, allowing students to grow plants and engage in gardening as part of their natural science education. The project also includes the cost of transporting and installing these greenhouses at the school. To support the greenhouse activities, garden tools and soil will also be purchased.

Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Climate Action:  Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.

Quality Education:  Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.

Life On Land:  Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Zero Hunger:  The food and agriculture sector offers key solutions for development, and is central for hunger and poverty eradication.

Sustainable Cities And Communities:  There needs to be a future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more.

Outcomes

Increased student engagement and participation through hands-on learning

Improved knowledge and skills in natural sciences and environmental stewardship

Creation of a greener school environment with 1,000+ trees and plants established

Enhanced air quality and healthier surroundings for students and the wider community

Strengthened teacher capacity to deliver practical, experiential education

Greater student ownership and pride in their school and local environment

Background

The ger districts of Ulaanbaatar have poorly developed infrastructure. Most families live in traditional Mongolian gers and burn coal, which leads to severe air pollution during the winter, spring, and autumn seasons. Amgalan Complex School is located in a ger district and has a total of 2,615 students. Due to the high levels of air pollution and dust in the school environment, it is essential to create green spaces. Additionally, the school has a limited budget, and due to the lack of natural science classrooms and equipment, students do not have the opportunity to reinforce their theoretical knowledge through practical learning.
