Overview

Explore charming towns and beautiful coastal villages on this 7-day self-guided cycling adventure along the coast of Maine. Your journey features postcard scenery, from stunning bays and hidden coves to the unique Acadia National Park. The shoreline is dressed up with sixty-five lighthouses offering picturesque vistas and novel stories. Immerse yourself in the historic landmark that inspired Andrew Wyeth for its masterpiece, marvel at the exquisitely renovated Victorian opera house, spend time in the art galleries and enjoy the cultural vibe as you cycle into Belfast. A holiday on the coast wouldn’t be complete without sampling delicacies on the menu: lobster, smoked salmon, fresh blueberries and the local favourite whoopee pies, a mini chocolate cake sandwich in a cookie form.

Following a hearty home-cooked breakfast while enjoying ocean vistas, you hop on your bike for another great cycling day. After navigating the quiet town of Port Clyde, we set out to explore Clark Island to take in the spectacular viewpoints of Owls Head Lighthouse that watches over Penobscot Bay. A site of beauty filled with mysterious haunted stories that will give you chills. You will make your way back inland to the eclectic village of Rockland, where there are opportunities for great seafood, browsing art galleries and much more. • Elevation Gain 1,095 to 2,100 ft

Meals: B

Take an early morning ferry across to Vinalhaven. Your day is spent exploring the Island by Bike with options to browse downtown or even go for a swim in the old granite quarry. • Elevation Gain 1,100 ft

Meals: B

You have three choices of rides today. A short ride to Camden will leave plenty of time to enjoy the Jewel of the Coast with its many historical and outdoor gems to discover. In the afternoon, you may choose to be active or relax and soak in the culture. From the Victorian Opera house to the seaside, options for theatre and glass blowing to kayaking and sailing are possible here. Your local inn will welcome you with a lovely “Europe meets Maine” atmosphere and the perfect place to spend the night. • Elevation Gain 572-2,324 ft

Meals: B

This morning you will be transferred to Mount Desert Island, where we access Acadia National Park. Your introduction to the park is by Acadia’s famous carriage roads. With gentle grades, no cars and breathtaking scenery, this day will be one of the highlights of your week. Forty-five miles of rustic roads were built as a gift from John D Rockefeller Jr in the first half of the 20th century, resulting in roads and bridges integrated into the forest and countryside, creating a seamless experience. After this amazing day, you will return to Bar Harbor and settle in for the rest of your trip. • Elevation Gain 1,800 ft

Meals: B

This morning you will board the ferry across Frenchman Bay, passing lighthouses, lobstermen, seaside mansions and mountains to Winter Harbor, where your exploration of the Schoodic Peninsula begins. From the year-round lobstering community, your ride on dedicated cycle paths will take you past coves, where seals like to sunbathe, to Schoodic Point and panoramic views of the open ocean. This afternoon, return to Bar Harbor for your last evening “down east.” • Elevation gain 1,559

Meals: B

The week’s last cycle is back in Acadia National Park on the famous Park Loop Road that winds along the shore past the sand beach at Newport cove and Thunder Hole. The optional climb up Cadillac Mountain is a favorite in the fall when the leaves have changed for the season. Make sure you are back by noon, when you are transferred back to Portland. • Elevation Gain 2,601 ft
