Overview

Manaslu (8167m) is the 8th highest mountain in the world and it is only in recent years that trekkers have begun to explore this rugged area. Trekking around Manaslu offers awesome mountain views, remote Buddhist villages close to the Tibetan border and cultural and geographic diversity that rivals any other trek in the Himalaya. The trek commences amidst the terraced fields and sub-tropical forests of the foothills. Climbing north, the landscape gradually transforms into the arid, high altitude landscapes associated with Tibetan culture. Traversing to the north of Manaslu, with time to visit the Base Camp that is used by expeditions, is a highlight of this trek. Beyond Manaslu, the climb continues until we reach the majestic Larkya La, which affords outstanding views in every direction of the Himalaya. After crossing the pass, we complete this rewarding circuit of Manaslu in the bustling villages of the Annapurna region.

You will be met at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport arrivals gate by a World Expeditions representative and transferred to the Radisson Hotel in a private vehicle. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to relax after your journey or explore the surrounding area at your own pace. A pre-trek briefing will be held at 4:30–5:00 pm, where your guide will outline the journey ahead and organise the distribution of your trekking kit including your kit bag, sleeping bag and down or fibrefill jacket. This evening we gather for a welcome group dinner, providing a great opportunity to meet your fellow travellers before the adventure begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: Nil

Today you have a full day to explore Kathmandu’s vibrant streets and cultural landmarks. You may wish to begin by visiting two of the city’s most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple and an important cremation site, and Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal and the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside of Tibet. Alternatively, you may prefer to wander through the markets and shops of the lively Thamel district, or explore other historic sites such as Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple), perched on a hilltop overlooking the city. The beautifully preserved plazas of Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and Kathmandu Durbar Square are also remarkable places to experience the rich cultural heritage and architecture of the Kathmandu Valley. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmand

Meals: B

Today we leave Kathmandu and travel west toward Pokhara, following a winding road that climbs over the rim of the valley before descending to the banks of the Trisuli River. The drive offers a fascinating glimpse into rural Nepal as we pass through small towns, terraced farmland and traditional villages. After crossing the Trisuli River, the road continues through scenic countryside with clear views of the Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal ranges appearing on the horizon. As we move deeper into the hills, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous and remote. By late afternoon we arrive at the small riverside village of Liding, where we set up camp above the river and prepare for the beginning of our trekking adventure. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Liding

Meals: B,L,D

Today we begin our trek by following a trail that gradually winds its way upstream along the Buri Gandaki River. The path undulates through forested hillsides, with a series of gentle climbs and descents as we make our way deeper into the valley. By midday we descend to a broad sandy riverbed where we stop for lunch beside the river. After our break, the trail continues along a scenic mountain path high above the water, offering lovely views of the valley below. Along the way we cross several suspension bridges and pass through small settlements before reaching the village of Khorlabesi, where we set up camp for the night. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Khorlabesi

Meals: B,L,D

Today we continue following the Buri Gandaki River as the valley narrows into a dramatic gorge with steep cliffs rising on both sides. The morning trail follows a path along the east bank of the river, at times carved into the cliffside, offering impressive views down into the rushing water below. Along the way we pass the natural hot springs at Tatopani, a welcome spot to pause before continuing on to cross the Dodan Khola. The trail gradually climbs as we move deeper into the mountains. At Jagat, we officially enter the Manaslu Conservation Area, a protected region known for its rich biodiversity and traditional mountain communities. Our camp is set in a rocky valley above the Buri Gandaki, surrounded by the rugged scenery of the lower Himalaya. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Jagat

Meals: B,L,D

Today’s walk is a pleasant stage as we continue along the trail beside the Buri Gandaki River, passing through a series of traditional villages and cultivated terraces. The path winds through forested hillsides with scenic views of natural waterfalls cascading down the cliffs above the valley. Along the way we pass small settlements where daily village life unfolds much as it has for generations, offering a glimpse into the culture of the Manaslu region. By afternoon we arrive at Chisapani (1,660 m / 5,446 ft), where we set up camp and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Chisapani

Meals: B,L,D

Continuing our journey up the Buri Gandaki Valley, the trail occasionally climbs high above the river to bypass narrow gorges where the cliffs leave little room for a path. These elevated sections provide dramatic views down into the river below and across the rugged valley walls. Along the way we may encounter mule caravans transporting supplies along the narrow mountain trail, an important part of daily life in these remote regions. The route passes through beautiful pine forest interspersed with rhododendron, adding colour to the landscape during the spring flowering season. By afternoon we arrive at Bihi Phedi (1,990 m / 6,529 ft) where we establish camp and enjoy the quiet surroundings of the upper valley. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Bihi Phedi

Meals: B,L,D

Today the trail climbs steadily before descending to cross a suspension bridge to the opposite bank of the Buri Gandaki River. As we continue along the valley, the landscape and culture begin to change, with mani walls and chortens appearing along the trail, signalling our gradual entry into a region strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture. The path follows the northern bank of the river below the village of Bihi, which is known for its family of skilled stone carvers. Along the trail we see beautifully carved flat stones engraved with intricate figures and small stupas. Just beyond Bihi we begin to catch our first glimpses of the peaks of Shringi Himal rising above the valley. Continuing along the river we reach the village of Ghap, a traditional Tibetan-style settlement where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon the trail climbs gently through dense forest of pine and birch, gradually gaining altitude. By late afternoon we arrive near Namrung (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where our camp is set amongst the trees on the edge of the village. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Namrung

Meals: B,L,D

Today we descend to cross the Damonan Khola before beginning a steady ascent along a narrow forest trail toward Namru. The path winds through beautiful woodland and past small Tibetan-influenced villages as we gradually gain altitude on our way toward the alpine valley. Along the trail we may encounter our first yak caravans, an important part of transport in this high mountain region. There is also a troop of monkeys that often comes down to the river nearby to drink. As we gain height, the scenery opens dramatically. Behind us stretch uninterrupted views of the Ganesh Himal and Baudha Himal ranges, while to the north the Kutang Himal forms a natural border between Nepal and Tibet. Ahead, the valley reveals its first great Himalayan panorama, with the impressive peaks of Himalchuli (7,893 m / 25,896 ft), Peak 29 / Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m / 25,823 ft) and the mighty Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft) dominating the skyline. By afternoon we reach Shyala (3,500 m / 11,483 ft) where we establish camp surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on the trek. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Shyala

Meals: B,L,D

Today we make a rewarding side trip to Pungyen Gompa, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Manaslu Circuit. The walk from Shyala takes around three to four hours and provides exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. The first half of the trek involves a gradual ascent along a wide alpine trail. As we gain height, the valley opens and the peaks surrounding Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft) dominate the skyline. At the top of the climb we pass a mani wall decorated with colourful prayer flags, marking the high point of the trail. From here the path descends gently into a beautiful glacial valley leading to Pungyen Gompa (4,100 m / 13,451 ft). Set beneath towering Himalayan peaks near the base of Mt Manaslu, this peaceful monastery is an important spiritual site for the local Nubri people. After time to explore the monastery and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery, we settle in for the night in this remarkable alpine setting. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Pungyen Gompa

Meals: B,L,D

Today begins with a descent as we make our way down toward the Pungyen Khola, crossing to the opposite side of the valley. The trail then leads across open alpine terrain and after about an hour we reach a beautiful flat pasture surrounded by mountain views. From here we continue toward the picturesque village of Samagaon, one of the main settlements in the upper Nubri Valley. This traditional village offers a fascinating glimpse into local life, with stone houses, prayer wheels and strong Tibetan cultural influences. After spending some time exploring Samagaon (3,530 m / 11,581 ft), we continue for another short walk of about half an hour to reach our nearby campsite at Kermo Kharka (3,500 m / 11,483 ft). Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Kermo Khark

Meals: B,L,D

Today is set aside as an important acclimatisation day to allow our bodies time to adjust to the increasing altitude. Spending an extra night at Kermo Kharka (3,500 m / 11,483 ft) improves our chances of comfortably continuing higher on the trek. For those feeling energetic, there is an optional walk toward Manaslu Base Camp (4,500 m / 14,764 ft). The trail climbs gradually along the ridge beneath Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft), offering increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding glaciers, high alpine lakes and towering Himalayan peaks. Depending on conditions, there may be sections of snow along the route. After taking time to enjoy the spectacular scenery, we return to Kermo Kharka for the afternoon to rest and continue acclimatising in preparation for the higher stages of the trek. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Kermo Kharka

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a shorter stage as we continue our gradual ascent into the higher reaches of the Manaslu region. Leaving the grassy pastures of Kermo Kharka, the trail enters more rugged terrain as we skirt around sections of glacial moraine before descending briefly to the riverbed. Throughout the walk we enjoy excellent views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft) rising dramatically above the surrounding peaks. Before long we arrive at the Tibetan refugee village of Samdo (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), a remote settlement of around 200 residents situated close to the Tibetan border. The village has a strong Tibetan cultural influence and offers a fascinating glimpse into life in this high Himalayan environment. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Samdo

Meals: B,L,D

Today we continue our gradual ascent toward the base of the Larkya La Pass. After crossing a couple of small streams, the impressive Larkya Glacier comes into view on the opposite side of the valley. The trail climbs steadily as we skirt around the Sarka Khola, following a rugged alpine route through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. The landscape becomes more barren and high-altitude in character as we gain elevation. By afternoon we reach Larkya Phedi (4,400 m / 14,436 ft), also known as Dharamsala, where we establish camp near a small brick hut at the base of the Larkya La Pass. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for tomorrow’s exciting pass crossing. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Larkya Phedi

Meals: B,L,D

Today is one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the trek as we cross the Larkya La Pass. Soon after setting off, the distinctive shape of Larkya Peak becomes visible as we steadily climb toward the pass. Although the gradient is gradual for much of the ascent, the high altitude means we take a slow and steady pace. It usually takes around five hours to reach the crest of the pass. The final section becomes steeper, but the effort is richly rewarded with extraordinary views across the Himalaya. From the top we enjoy a sweeping panorama that includes Himlung Himal (7,126 m / 23,379 ft), Gyaji Kang (7,074 m / 23,209 ft), Kang Guru (6,981 m / 22,903 ft), Annapurna II (7,937 m / 26,040 ft) and surrounding peaks. From the pass we begin a long and often steep descent across sections of ice, moraine and scree, following the edge of the glacier. Careful footing is required as we gradually descend into the valley of the Burdin Khola. By late afternoon we reach Bimtang (3,590 m / 11,778 ft), a beautiful alpine valley surrounded by towering peaks where we establish camp after an exhilarating day in the high mountains. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Bimtang

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a well-deserved rest day at Bimtang (3,590 m / 11,778 ft) following yesterday’s long and demanding crossing of the Larkya La Pass. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, this peaceful alpine valley is the perfect place to relax and recover. You may wish to take a gentle walk around the valley to stretch your legs and enjoy views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers, or simply rest and take in the tranquil mountain atmosphere after the achievements of the previous days. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Bimtang

Meals: B,L,D

Today we begin our descent as the trail follows the Marsyangdi River downstream through a beautiful mountain valley. The path gradually leaves the high alpine terrain behind and enters a pristine forest of pine and rhododendron. During the spring months these forests burst into colour with vibrant rhododendron blooms, making this section of the trek particularly scenic. Along the way there are still excellent views of the surrounding mountains, with Himlung Himal (7,126 m / 23,379 ft) and Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft) rising above the valleys behind us. By afternoon we arrive at the small village of Gho (2,515 m / 8,251 ft) where we establish camp and enjoy the warmer air of the lower valley. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping Gho

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast we begin the final walk of the trek, following the trail through forest and small villages as we descend toward Dharapani. This section of the trail offers pleasant walking with views along the Marsyangdi Valley and through cultivated farmland. After around 3–4 hours we reach Dharapani, where we meet our vehicle at the roadhead and begin the drive down the valley toward Besisahar. The journey takes approximately 4–5 hours, following the winding road along the Marsyangdi River through rural villages and terraced hillsides. By late afternoon we arrive at Besisahar (760 m / 2,493 ft), a lively town situated on a plateau above the river and the administrative centre of the Lamjung District. Accommodation: Lodge Besisahar

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast we begin the drive back to Kathmandu, travelling along the scenic highway that follows the valleys and hills of central Nepal. Along the way we join the main Kathmandu–Pokhara Highway at the busy market town of Dumre, where the road continues east toward the capital. The journey passes through lively roadside towns, terraced farmland and river valleys, offering a final glimpse of rural Nepal after our time in the mountains. Upon arrival in Kathmandu (1,330 m / 4,364 ft) the remainder of the day is free to relax, enjoy a hot shower, or explore the nearby streets and cafés. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B,L

After breakfast arrangements conclude unless further services have been arranged. Those travelling by aircraft to onward destinations will be transferred to Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport for departure.
