Overview

Java is an island of forested volcanoes rising between the Indian Ocean and the Java Sea. This adventure reveals both its beauty and depth, from the serene grandeur of Borobudur Temple, the world’s largest Buddhist monument, to the misty peaks of Mount Arjuna and Mount Bromo.

Begin in Yogyakarta, Java’s cultural capital, where royal palaces and artist workshops preserve centuries of Javanese tradition. Here, explore Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 9th century. Carved from volcanic stone, its nine terraces are designed to represent the path to enlightenment.

Travel east by scenic train to Malang, gateway to Java’s highlands, where fertile volcanic soil support plantations of tea, coffee, and clove. From here, spend three days trekking through mountain forests of pine, acacia and casuarina, and farmland where villagers cultivate vegetables, potatoes and corn on the fertile slopes. Climb the twin volcanoes of Mount Arjuna (3,339m/10,955 ft) and Mount Welirang (3,185m/10,449 ft) on consecutive days, with nights spent camping beneath the stars.

Continue to Lawang, with it's tea filled hillsides, before your final hike up Mount Penanjaken (2,770m/9,088 ft), to take in the glorious vistas of Mount Bromo and the surrounding volcanoes at sunrise. Concluding in Denpasar, you can easily extend your time to relax in tropical Bali.

Upon arrival in Yogyakarta, you will be met at the airport and transferred to our group hotel, (1.5hour drive). Here, you will be provided with a briefing about your trip, ensuring a smooth start to your adventure. Situated almost exactly halfway along the length of Java, in an area considered to be the heartland of the Javanese, Yogyakarta is home to some of the island's oldest traditions and blessed with a rich, fertile soil from the volcanic ash. It is the cultural capital of Java, with a real mixture of cultural influences, including Hindu and Buddhist temples, dating from the 8th century, Islamic Palaces from the 18th century and Dutch colonial architecture. Dinner tonight is at the hotel. Overnight: Eclipse Hotel or similar

Meals: D

This morning, set out by car at 8.30am to explore the cultural heart of Yogyakarta. Begin with a visit to the Keraton, the former royal palace of Yogyakarta’s sultans. This walled compound is the historic centre of the old city and remains a symbol of Javanese heritage. Continue to the ruins of Taman Sari, the Sultan’s former pleasure gardens and water palace. Depending on your interests, there may also be time to visit local batik workshops, artisan studios, or browse the colourful markets. Malioboro Street is ideal for last-minute shopping and soaking up the city’s vibrant atmosphere. In the afternoon, drive out to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument and one of Southeast Asia’s most important archaeological sites. This UNESCO World Heritage site predates Angkor Wat by 300 years and showcases intricate stone carvings that depict Buddhist teachings and scenes of 8th century Javanese life. Rediscovered in 1815 and carefully restored, it remains a highlight of Central Java. Note: The Keraton and Borobudur are closed on Mondays. Overnight: Gallery Prawirotaman or similar

This morning, 8am transfer to the railway station for a scenic train journey to Malang aboard the KA Malioboro Express Express (09:31 AM – 16:14 PM). Travelling in Executive Class with air-conditioning, this 6.5-hour rail journey offers a comfortable and immersive way to witness Java’s ever-changing countryside and observe daily life from the window seat. On arrival in Malang, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. Once a favoured hill retreat during the Dutch colonial era, Malang is East Java’s second largest city and is still known for its cooler climate, tree-lined streets and heritage buildings. Locals sometimes refer to it as the “Paris of East Java.” Overnight: Cozy Boutique, Suite Room

Meals: B

After a simple breakfast at the hotel, we meet our local trekking crew and transfer by vehicle to Sumber Brantas village, located in the cool highlands of Batu. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers scenic views of the surrounding mountain landscapes. On arrival, we begin our trek toward Lembah Lengkean, a valley base camp situated at the foot of Mount Arjuno. The trail winds through open farmland, where we may meet local villagers tending their crops, before entering denser forest. With some luck, we might spot deer or other wildlife native to the region. After approximately 4–5 hours on foot, we reach Lembah Lengkean, a peaceful base camp with impressive views of the Arjuno–Welirang volcano range. It's an ideal spot to witness both sunrise and sunset across the valley. Tonight, we settle into our tents for an early night in preparation for tomorrow’s pre-dawn ascent. Overnight: Lembah Lengkean base camp - Tented Camp

Meals: B,L,D

An early alpine start as we rise around midnight for our first summit objective: Mount Arjuno (3339m / 10,955ft). Departing camp around 1:00am, we begin a steep 30-minute ascent to the Kembar 2 Peak (3113m / 10,213ft). After a short break, we continue our climb through rugged volcanic terrain, gaining elevation steadily over the next 3.5 hours. Reaching the summit of Arjuno around sunrise is a powerful experience, with sweeping views over the volcanic ridges and valleys below. After time to take photos and soak in the achievement, we begin the descent, returning to camp by late morning. A hot brunch awaits at Lembah Lengkean Base Camp, followed by a restful afternoon to recover and enjoy the peaceful mountain setting. Tonight, rest well in preparation for tomorrow’s ascent of Mount Welirang. Overnight: Camping at Lembah Lengkean Base Camp

Meals: B,L,D

Today we make our second summit attempt, this time to Mount Welirang (3185m / 10,449ft). We begin the ascent before dawn, following a trail that passes the shoulder of Gunung Kembar 1, another peak in the Arjuno–Welirang volcanic chain. The trail gradually climbs to the summit, where we explore the wide crater and its active fumarole fields. Welirang is known for traditional sulphur mining, where sulphur is still quarried by hand using primitive tools. The return to camp usually takes a total of around 4 hours, though weather conditions may affect the timing. After breakfast and some rest back at Lembah Lengkean Base Camp, we begin our descent to Sumber Brantas village, retracing our route through forest and farmland. On arrival, we transfer by vehicle to Lawang, a small highland settlement near Tretes, known for its lush tea plantations. Drive time is approx. two hours. Tonight, we stay in simple but charming guesthouse accommodation on the estate, with sweeping views of green hills and volcanic peaks. You may also have the chance to observe local tea farmers at work in the surrounding fields. Overnight: Guesthouse, Lawang

Meals: B,L,D

We begin the day with time to enjoy the peaceful morning atmosphere at the Lawang Tea Plantation, soaking in the views of rolling green hills and cool mountain air. You may choose to take a short walk on the trails surrounding the plantation or simply relax at the guesthouse. Late morning, we transfer to the Bromo highlands. The journey takes around four hours and offers views of rural East Java—farmland, quiet villages, and forested slopes. Upon arrival, check in to your accommodation near the rim of the caldera. With an early departure planned for tomorrow’s sunrise adventure, tonight is best spent resting and preparing for one of the highlights of the trip. Overnight: Lava View Lodge Hotel or similar

Meals: B,L

An early start today as we rise at 3:00am for the drive to Mt Penanjakan, the best-known viewpoint in the region. From the summit, watch the sun rise over the surreal volcanic landscape, Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru glowing in the early light. After sunrise, we descend by vehicle onto the Sea of Sand, the vast volcanic plain surrounding Mt Bromo. From here, we ride on horseback (included) across the ash fields to reach the base of Mt Bromo. A short stair climb leads to the crater rim, where you can peer into the steaming volcanic abyss. We return to the lodge for breakfast, then transfer to Surabaya Airport (3.5 hours drive) for your onward flight to Denpasar. Upon arrival at Denpasar airport you will be transferred to your hotel in in Kuta, Sanur or Legian. Trip concludes.
