Overview

Mount Kailash has drawn pilgrims for centuries, believed to be the mythical Mount Meru, the spiritual centre of the universe. Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and Bonpo alike, it’s a mountain revered more for its meaning than its summit. Set on the remote western reaches of the Tibetan Plateau, it’s one of the world’s most profound pilgrimage destinations, and also one of the hardest to reach.

This unique journey blends light trekking with immersive cultural touring. Starting in Chengdu, we travel overland from Lhasa through Gyantse and Shigatse, crossing stark plains and high mountain passes as we head deep into the spiritual heart of Tibet. Along the way we visit vibrant towns, ancient monasteries and sacred sites rarely seen by outsiders.

We join the sacred kora - a three-day walk around the base of Mount Kailash - alongside Tibetan pilgrims. Though not technically demanding, the high altitude and spiritual weight of the journey make it one of the world’s most unforgettable circuits. Following the kora, we conclude the journey in Kathmandu, completing a high-altitude arc through the sacred lands of Tibet and Nepal.

Timed to coincide with the Saga Dawa Festival - Tibet’s most important annual celebration, our journey reaches Mount Kailash at its most atmospheric. Pilgrims gather from across the region to honour the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha, creating a rare spectacle of prayer, ritual and celebration.

We arrive in Chengdu, the vibrant capital of Sichuan Province, known for its teahouses, Sichuan cuisine, and laid-back atmosphere. A World Expeditions representative meets us at the airport and transfers us to our hotel. The afternoon and evening are free to relax or explore the lively local streets at our own pace. Overnight: Hotel in Chengdu

Meals: Nil

This morning, we are transferred to the airport for the flight to Lhasa. You will be advised which flight to book as the group are required to arrive into Tibet together due to the group permit. On arrival at Lhasa Airport you will be transferred to the city, a drive that takes around two hours. Due to the high altitude, you need to take it easy when you arrive in Lhasa. (Chengdu to Lhasa flights not included in trip cost.) A briefing will be given around 5pm by your guide, where arrangements will be made for the distribution of your kit bag, sleeping bag and down/fibrefill jacket. Overnight: Hotel in Lhasa

Meals: B

We spend two days discovering the rich history and sacred sites of Lhasa. Highlights include a visit to the Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s most important religious site, and a walk through Barkhor Square, where pilgrims from across Tibet gather in devotion. We explore the striking Potala Palace, former home of the Dalai Lama, and stroll through the gardens of Norbulingka, his traditional summer residence. We also visit Drepung and Sera Monasteries, both key centres of Tibetan Buddhism, where we witness daily monastic life and may see the monks engage in their famous debating practice. These days offer a perfect introduction to the heart of Tibetan culture. Overnight (both nights): Hotel in Lhasa

Meals: B

Today we begin our journey across the vast Tibetan Plateau towards Mount Kailash. From Lhasa, we travel through the Kyichu Valley and along the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River), before climbing to the Khamba La Pass (4,900m). From here, we enjoy breathtaking views of Yamdrok Tso, a shimmering turquoise lake framed by snow-capped mountains. Our route continues around the lake and over the Karo La Pass (5,200m), where dramatic glacier views await. We arrive in the historic town of Gyantse, where we visit the Kumbum Chorten – an impressive multi-level Buddhist structure built in the 15th century, filled with chapels and vibrant murals. Please note: travel conditions in Tibet can be unpredictable. Flexibility and patience are essential. Overnight: Hotel in Gyantse

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we enjoy a short and scenic drive to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. On arrival, we visit the impressive Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama. Tashilhunpo is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the highest-ranking spiritual leaders in Tibetan Buddhism. With its golden rooftops, ancient prayer halls, and bustling monastic life, it offers deep insight into Tibetan spiritual traditions and political history. Overnight: Hotel in Shigatse

Meals: B,L,D

Today we set off on a long and dramatic drive westward across the vast Tibetan Plateau toward the town of Saga. This journey offers unforgettable views of rolling high-altitude plains, distant snow-capped peaks, and remote villages that highlight the sheer scale and solitude of the region. While the roads are improving, they can be slow and unpredictable in sections—an inherent part of travelling through such a remote and rugged landscape. This stretch of the journey truly gives us a sense of the wild beauty and isolation of the "roof of the world." Overnight: Guesthouse in Saga

Meals: B,L,D

This morning, we enjoy a more relaxed start as we continue our journey across the Tibetan Plateau. Along the way, we take in sweeping views of Lake Manasarovar (Mapam Yumtso), a sacred and pristine freshwater lake nestled at the foot of Mount Kailash. Fed by the meltwaters of the Kailash glaciers, the lake is considered one of the holiest in the world, revered by Bön, Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions alike. After time to take in the lake’s spiritual presence and Himalayan vistas, we complete the short drive to Darchen, a small but significant settlement that sits at the base of Mount Kailash. This is the traditional starting point for the Kailash Kora, attracting pilgrims from across the Himalayan region. Overnight: Guesthouse in Darchen

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, we set out on a scenic and culturally rich day of sightseeing across the plateau. Our journey begins with a visit to Rakshas Tal (also known as Lake Rakshastal), a striking saltwater lake located near the sacred Lake Manasarovar. Though barren and hauntingly beautiful, it holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu mythology, associated with Ravana, the demon king from the Ramayana. We then continue to Chiu Gompa, a serene monastery perched on a rocky hilltop above the shores of Manasarovar. This quiet monastery is not only a place of devotion but also home to the revered Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) cave, where the great Buddhist master is believed to have meditated centuries ago. We’ll take time to explore the monastery and soak in the tranquil atmosphere before returning to Darchen for the night. Overnight: Guesthouse in Darchen

This morning, we take a short drive to Shorsiun, the ceremonial site of the Saka Dawa Festival, and the starting point of our kora (pilgrimage walk) around sacred Mount Kailash. Here, we’ll meet our yak porters, who will carry our luggage during the three-day trek. Our walk today follows a slow, steady ascent through the breathtaking Lha Chu Valley. As we trek alongside the glacial river, we’re surrounded by dramatic cliffs and snow-capped peaks. The view of Mount Kailash gradually unfolds, its iconic north face becoming more prominent with each step. The energy is especially powerful during the month of Saka Dawa, as hundreds of pilgrims from across Tibet and India gather here. Many wear traditional clothing, chant mantras, and spin prayer wheels as they walk, creating a vibrant and sacred atmosphere. We continue toward Dera Puk Monastery, our overnight stop, nestled opposite the north face of Mount Kailash. The views from here are among the most striking of the entire journey. Overnight: Guesthouse near Dera Puk (basic accommodation)

Meals: B,L,D

Today marks the most physically demanding and spiritually significant day of our Mount Kailash pilgrimage. We begin our trek early in the morning to take advantage of the best weather conditions and to give ourselves plenty of time to cross Dolma La Pass (5,630m) the highest point on the kora. The trail begins with a steep, slow ascent, and as we climb, the air becomes thinner and the terrain more challenging. We take our time, moving at a careful and steady pace to manage the altitude. As we approach the pass, we’re surrounded by colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and we may witness pilgrims pausing here for prayers or small offerings. This pass symbolizes the crossing from one life to the next, a place of transformation and renewal in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. After reaching the summit, we descend a steep path into the valley below. The descent is rocky and can be slippery, requiring caution. Once in the valley, the trail flattens out and continues for several hours along a peaceful, barren landscape with views of distant cliffs and streams until we reach Zutrul Phuk Monastery, built near a cave where Milarepa is said to have meditated. Tonight’s accommodation is basic and may be shared in dormitory-style lodges due to the high volume of pilgrims during the Saka Dawa season. Overnight: Guesthouse in Zutrul Phuk (shared dorms may apply)

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we begin the final leg of our sacred journey around Mount Kailash. The trail is relatively easy compared to the previous days, mostly flat and gradually descending as we walk through wide, open valleys. We follow the river as it meanders through the landscape, with occasional glimpses of Mount Kailash behind us, a final reminder of the profound path we've just walked. Along the way, we pass groups of pilgrims, mani walls, and prayer flags that mark the devotion of countless others who have come before us. Around midday, we arrive back in Darchen, completing the full Kora, a significant achievement both physically and spiritually. After checking into our guesthouse, we have the afternoon to relax, reflect, and enjoy a well-deserved meal at a local restaurant. It's a chance to rest our legs and appreciate the journey we've just completed. Overnight: Guesthouse in Darchen

Meals: B,L,D

Today is a special and spiritually charged experience as we take part in the Saga Dawa Festival, one of the most important and sacred events in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. After an early breakfast, we drive the short distance to Shorsiun, the ceremonial site for this revered occasion. Saga Dawa celebrates the three most significant events in the life of the Buddha, his birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana, all of which are said to have occurred on the full moon of the fourth Tibetan month. As we arrive, the valley is alive with energy. Thousands of pilgrims from across Tibet gather to witness the raising of the Tarboche flagpole, a towering prayer flag mast covered with multicoloured prayer flags and mantras. Monks chant prayers, incense fills the air, and the crowd erupts in cheers and the throwing of barley flour, a traditional offering for good fortune. We will have ample time to walk among the crowds, take part in the celebration, and soak in this unforgettable cultural and spiritual moment. We may choose to return to Darchen either on foot alongside the pilgrims or by vehicle. It’s a fitting conclusion to our Mount Kailash pilgrimage, a moment of reflection, connection, and celebration. Overnight: Guesthouse in Darchen

Meals: B,L,D

We begin the return leg of our journey today, driving across the vast and rugged landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau toward the town of Saga. The journey takes us through remote high-altitude terrain, dotted with herds of yak, prayer flags flapping in the wind, and distant snow-capped peaks stretching to the horizon. This section of our overland route follows the newer road linking Tibet to Nepal, opened to tourism in 2017 after the former Friendship Highway was damaged in the 2015 earthquake. It’s a road that few travellers have taken, adding a real sense of adventure and discovery to our expedition. As we wind our way through this extraordinary landscape, we’ll have opportunities to stop for photographs, short walks, and local interactions where possible. The scenery is both stark and striking, a reminder of the resilience and beauty of this part of the world. By late afternoon or early evening, we arrive in Saga, a key trading town and our stop for the night. After a long travel day, we settle in to our guesthouse for a warm meal and a good rest. Overnight: Guesthouse in Saga

Meals: B,L,D

Today we continue our overland journey, driving south from the vast, high-altitude plains of Tibet into the dramatic landscapes of the Kyirong Valley. As we descend, the scenery transforms rapidly, from barren plateau to deep river gorges and lush, green hillsides. This striking shift in environment marks the beginning of our gradual return to lower elevations. The road, while rugged in parts, winds through remote villages and offers breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls, pine forests, and steep cliff faces. By late afternoon or evening, we reach the border town of Kyirong, our final stop in Tibet. After checking in to our guesthouse, we can relax and prepare for tomorrow’s crossing into Nepal, and the final stage of this extraordinary journey. Overnight: Guesthouse in Kyirong

Meals: B,L,D

This morning, we bid farewell to Tibet as we cross the border into Nepal. After clearing immigration at the Kyirong-Rasuwa border post, we begin our drive through Nepal’s lush foothills, a dramatic contrast to the stark beauty of the Tibetan plateau. The road winds through vibrant hill villages, terraced fields, and deep river valleys, offering a rich and ever-changing panorama. As we descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape greener, giving us our first taste of Nepal’s subtropical climate. By late afternoon, we arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal’s lively capital. After checking into our hotel, we can enjoy a well-earned rest, or take a short walk to soak in the energy of this historic city, filled with temples, colourful markets, and warm hospitality. Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu

Meals: B

Today we enjoy a full free day to relax or explore the many treasures of Kathmandu at our own pace. After days of travel through remote landscapes, the colourful buzz of the capital offers a vibrant contrast. We might choose to wander the lively streets of Thamel, Kathmandu’s popular tourist hub filled with cafés, bookshops, and markets, or explore some of the city's most iconic cultural landmarks. Recommended highlights include: • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): A stunning hilltop stupa with panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley. • Boudhanath Stupa: One of the largest and most sacred Buddhist stupas in the world — a peaceful place to circumambulate and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. • Pashupatinath Temple: An important Hindu temple complex on the banks of the Bagmati River, often visited by sadhus and pilgrims. • Durbar Square: The historical heart of Kathmandu, filled with palaces, courtyards, and centuries-old temples. • Garden of Dreams: A serene, European-style garden near Thamel, perfect for a quiet moment of reflection. Optional guided sightseeing can be arranged for those who prefer a structured experience. Whether we choose to dive deep into the city’s culture or simply enjoy a relaxed meal in Thamel, this final day is the perfect way to reflect on our extraordinary journey before returning home. Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu

Meals: B

After breakfast, our incredible journey comes to an end. Airport transfers will be provided in accordance with our individual flight times. As we bid farewell to our fellow travellers and the rich cultures we've encountered, we take with us lasting memories of sacred landscapes, vibrant festivals, and meaningful connections made along the way, a truly unforgettable adventure through Tibet and Nepal.
