Regenerative 2030

  • Support a program providing immersive ocean experiences for all 7th graders every year across all four inhabited islands
  • Helping local youth to develop a sense of place and understanding of the reciprocal relationship between people and the ocean.
  • Strengthen community stewardship by working at the intersection of science, education and tourism.
  • Implement a sustainable financial model, integrating public institutions, private sector and local community partnerships.

The Galápagos Islands are globally recognised for their unparalleled biodiversity. However, local youth and communities often lack access to the experiences that define the islands for visitors. The region’s tourism-based economy has led to rapid population growth, which has not been met with increased opportunities for access to marine and coastal protected areas across the islands. A newly implemented, contextualized curriculum for the Galápagos now provides opportunities for enhanced place-based learning and out-of-the-classroom experiential learning scenarios. The Galápagos Infinito Program aims to bridge the accessibility gap for all 7th graders each year.

Without meaningful engagement and the development of a sense of place and connection to nature, future generations may struggle to understand the urgency of marine conservation and sustainable living. The Galápagos Infinito Program offers structured, curriculum-integrated activities that promote ocean stewardship, cultural identity, and community resilience. The program currently provides a full-day Sailing Oceanic Classroom experience, which includes navigation on a sailboat, coastal ecosystem immersion through exploration stations such as nature walks, intertidal zone studies, and snorkeling. These activities are complemented by self-awareness practices, including breathwork and yoga. The program has organised with the Galapgos National Park to omit the visitor permits for this iniative, cutting costs dramatically. The one-day boat charter cost for hosting the oceanic classroom experience is USD $690. This represents an operational cost value, while the true value of the charter exceeds USD $1,000 per day. The local community are working together to encourage youth empowerment and custodianship of the land.

Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Quality Education:  Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.

Sustainable Cities And Communities:  There needs to be a future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more.

Life Below Water:  Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.

Life On Land:  Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Impacts

  • Through this project, 500 youth are engaged annually in marine and conservation experiences across the four inhabited islands.
  • 10 local educators and guides have been trained to facilitate experiential learning.
  • This program has seen the creation of localized educational materials integrating conservation themes into the school curriculum.
  • The initiative has been the establishment of a community network supporting long-term environmental stewardship.

Outcomes

Within 5 years, a generational shift in terms of “shared experience” across the local youth within Galapagos, with 2500 direct beneficiaries.

Indirect beneficiaries include teachers, parents, siblings and community around the student beneficiaries, with increased contribution to conservation efforts.

Increase in 10% a year of spaces being offered on tourism boats to take students out on longer immersive experiences.

Increased ocean literacy & engagement: Post-activity surveys show increase knowledge and self of engagement (over 8/10 points)

Background

All activities are approved by the Galápagos National Park Directorate and the local school district.

The program collaborates with all 20 local schools, including directors, teachers, and student partners, to prepare for the outings.

It also works with tourism operators to create shared value through regenerative tourism.

Additionally, the program engages with other community organisations to build capacity, pool resources, ensure culturally relevant programming, and support conservation initiatives and community science.
