Regenerative 2030

  • Establishing a network of river barriers and implement educational programs that promote environmental stewardship
  • Raising awareness about plastic pollution
  • Advocating for sustainable waste management practices

The World Expeditions Foundation is raising funds to protect and restore Indonesia’s rivers through cleanups and by engaging local communities in cleanup initiatives. The acclaimed waste management NGO 'Sungai Watch' will implement and maintain a mini floater barrier in a required location in Bali for 12-monthsusing these funds. The project funds will also be used to employ local staff to regularly monitor, collect, process, sort, wash and channel the waste at this mini floater barrier. Waste is a monumental issue of our times, and this project contributes to a more sustainable and impactful approach to river and ocean protection. Sungai Watch commits to collecting a minimum of 500 kilograms of non-organic waste and plastics to be collected by the end of the sponsorship year.

Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Clean Water And Sanitation:  Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in.

Responsible Production and Consumption:  Responsible Production and Consumption

Life Below Water:  Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.

Sustainable Cities And Communities:  There needs to be a future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more.

Climate Action:  Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.

Decent Work And Economic Growth:  Sustainable economic growth will require societies to create the conditions that allow people to have quality jobs.

Life On Land:  Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Impacts

  • Installation of one mini floater barrier in a river system in Bali
  • Regular cleaning of waste through partial funding of employment of 11-16 local staff in one station, and will support the process of sorting + washing + channelling to ensure as much circularity as possible
  • Improving the health of local ecosystems and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the affected areas
  • Collecting a minimum of 500 kilograms non-organic waste through the installation of the trash barrier, by the end of the 12-month partnership

Outcomes

Job Creation and Economic Development: As Sungai Watch expand their operations, the welfare investments in local staff will lead to job stability and potential job creation within the community, fostering economic resilience and social well-being.

Environmental Health Improvement: With increased cleanup efficiency, Sungai Watch anticipate a measurable reduction in plastic pollution in local rivers, contributing to improved water quality and ecosystem health.

Background

Indonesia is the second-largest contributor to ocean plastic pollution, with approximately 3.2 million tons of plastic entering the oceans annually. Indonesia's rivers are a significant source of this pollution, impacting local communities and ecosystems. Statistics indicate that 80% of plastic waste in their rivers is generated from urban areas without adequate waste management systems (World Bank, 2021). Sungai Watch efforts target these issues directly by implementing cleanup activities and promoting proper waste disposal practices. Sungai Watch employs 152 full-time employees and a rotating number of volunteers during regular community cleanups, with 10,000+ community members engaged since 2020.The indirect impacts of this work extend beyond immediate cleanup efforts, fostering long-term environmental and community benefits.
