Overview

The Faroe Islands are a wild North Atlantic world of sheer sea cliffs, extraordinary birdlife and small villages shaped by centuries of island life. Here, ocean, wind and fast-changing weather create a landscape of shifting light, green mountains and dramatic coastlines. Imagine kayaking beneath towering cliffs and striking sea stacks, past waterfalls and into sea caves, with the mountains rising around you from the ocean. Exploring from the water puts you at the heart of this rugged coastline, while time on foot reveals green valleys, traditional villages and dramatic landscapes above.

Each day brings a different exploration, shaped by local conditions. Paddle between Streymoy and Eysturoy, explore the sea caves of Eysturoy’s craggy coastline and take in Risin og Kellingin, known as the Giant and the Witch, rising from the sea. Swap paddle for walking boots to follow hillside paths, coastal walks and mountain trails, discovering waterfalls, fjords and villages tucked beneath the mountains.

After your first night in Tórshavn, spend five nights in cottage accommodation on the east coast of Streymoy, returning after each day’s adventure for meals prepared by your guides. Finish at Vestmanna with a boat journey beneath towering bird cliffs, where thousands of seabirds nest during summer. Combining kayaking and hiking, this journey reveals the Faroes from two distinct perspectives: at sea level beneath its cliffs and sea stacks, and on foot among its mountains, valleys and villages.

Join in Tórshavn and make your way to the group hotel, where check-in is available from the afternoon. In the early evening you meet your kayak guide at the hotel for a trip briefing. Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and lies on the south-eastern coast of Streymoy Island. The day ends with dinner together at a restaurant in Tórshavn before returning to the hotel. Sea kayaking Eiði and the coast is your main objective today, beginning with a pickup from the group hotel between 8.00–9.00am and a transfer to the Hósvík kayak boathouse on Streymoy Island for gear fitting and a safety briefing. Your luggage travels with you and is stored in the transfer vehicle while you kayak, before the group and kayaks continue to Eiði on the north-west tip of Eysturoy Island. Launch from a rocky beach and follow the craggy coastline towards a series of sea caves, where waterfalls can often be paddled beneath at the entrances, with views towards Risin og Kellingin, Faroese for the Giant and the Witch, two sea stacks standing at 71m / 233ft and 69m / 226ft respectively, while puffins and other seabirds may be sighted on the water and overhead. Today’s kayaking explores the sheltered waters between Streymoy and Eysturoy, where the neighbouring islands create a broad, river-like passage framed by high mountains. Depending on conditions, you may paddle from Eiði towards Fossá, one of the highest waterfalls in the Faroe Islands, located on the eastern side of Streymoy. The waterfall drops over two levels against dark lava cliffs, creating a striking sight when viewed from the sea. After returning to your accommodation, there may be time to relax or, for those wanting to stretch their legs, take a local walk. Accommodation: Cottage accommodation

Depending on conditions, today may begin with a transfer to Skarðsáfossur, a hidden coastal waterfall on Vágar Island that drops from high green cliffs onto a secluded dark rocky beach. Hike out to the waterfall before continuing up and over the hills to high sea-cliff views, with puffin colonies and the North Atlantic below. Later, there may be time for a relaxed sea kayaking excursion in the central fjord near Hósvík, with the possibility of paddling into the evening as the sun sets between the mountains. After exploring Vágar on foot and the waters near Hósvík by kayak, return to your cottage accommodation for the evening. Accommodation: Cottage accommodation

Today you head to the rugged coast of Oyndafjordur on the north-east coast of Eysturoy Island. From here, sea kayak beneath cliffs rising around 500m / 1,640ft and into Funningsfjordur, one of the deepest fjords in the archipelago, where steep mountain walls rise directly from the water and paddling at their base reveals the scale of the surrounding landscape. Along the route, explore sea caves and pass Lítlanes and Elduvík, a traditional Faroese settlement on the coast. After the day’s kayaking, return to your cottage accommodation for relaxation and dinner. Accommodation: Cottage accommodation

With calm conditions, today’s coastal exploration of northern Eysturoy begins with a sea kayak from Fuglafjørður to Oyndafjørður. On reaching Oyndafjørður, swap paddles for walking boots and hike over the high pass behind the hill of Husafelli, with up to 353 m / 1,158 ft of elevation gain, before descending back to Fuglafjørður where the day began. Meaning “The Bird Fjord”, Fuglafjørður sits at the head of a sheltered fjord surrounded by seven mountains, with birdlife, a natural harbour and fishing grounds reflecting the village’s connection with the sea. After completing the kayaking and hiking circuit, return to your cottage accommodation for the evening. Accommodation: Cottage accommodation

On your final day, leave the cottage accommodation and travel to Vestmanna for a boat trip beneath the sea cliffs, where thousands of seabirds nest during the summer months. Rising to 700m / 2,297ft, the cliffs provide nesting habitat for puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fulmars. Back on land, have a farewell lunch in Vestmanna before transferring to Tórshavn. The trip concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation in Tórshavn; accommodation and dinner tonight are not included. Accommodation: Not included

Faroe Islands accommodation

Your first night is spent in a hotel in Tórshavn before moving to cottage accommodation on the east coast of Streymoy for the following five nights. The cottages provide a convenient base for each day’s kayaking and hiking, with sea and mountain views, private bathroom facilities and an equipped kitchen where your guides prepare meals. After each day’s activities, you return to the same base rather than moving between accommodation.

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings. 

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run. 

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route. 

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.

The 7-day itinerary includes around 4–5 days of sea kayaking, depending on weather and sea conditions. A typical paddling outing lasts around 2–4 hours, covering approximately 8–15 km / 5–9 mi. Routes may include sheltered fjords, narrow sounds, sea caves, waterfalls and sections of rugged coastline

Previous sea kayaking experience is not mandatory. This trip is suitable for reasonably fit travellers who are confident swimming and comfortable being active for several hours at a time. We primarily use double kayaks, and before the first paddle we provide a thorough safety and sea kayaking briefing with time to familiarise yourself with the kayaks and equipment.

The itinerary includes around 1–3 days of hiking or walking, often combined with kayaking. Hikes may follow hillside paths, coastal trails and mountain routes, with outings of up to 10 km / 6.2 mi. Some terrain may be rocky or soft underfoot.

The trip is graded Moderate. Sea kayaking can be compared to brisk walking or cycling, and you should be comfortable with several hours of activity. The level of difficulty can vary with the weather and sea conditions, which can change quickly in the Faroe Islands. A reasonable level of fitness and confidence swimming are recommended

The itinerary is intentionally flexible. Each day, our guides assess the weather and sea conditions and choose the most suitable combination of kayaking and hiking. If conditions are unsuitable for paddling, we may spend the day exploring on foot instead. The published itinerary should therefore be treated as indicative rather than a fixed route.

We primarily use double sea kayaks for safety and group management. Single kayaks may be requested, but they are subject to approval, appropriate paddling experience and the guide’s discretion.

We provide expedition sea kayaks, paddles, life jackets, kayaking safety equipment, dry suits and kayak booties. You will need to bring your own personal clothing and equipment as outlined in the pre-departure gear list.

Yes. Meals are included from dinner on Day 1 through to lunch on Day 7. During the cottage stay, breakfasts, picnic-style lunches and evening meals are prepared by the guides. Dietary requirements can be catered for when advised in advance, although options may be more limited in remote locations.

There are opportunities to see seabirds including puffins, as well as razorbills, guillemots and fulmars. The trip finishes with a boat journey beneath the Vestmanna bird cliffs, where thousands of seabirds nest during the summer months. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
