Overview

You'll never forget this experience at the beautiful Sacha Lodge, which is located on the banks of Pilchicocha lake and the fringes of Yasuni National Park in Amazonian Ecuador. This important UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is the largest tract of tropical rainforest in Ecuador and is home to a plethora of fauna and flora. Each day we take to either the water, in dug out canoes, to the trails, to the parrot clay licks, or to the canopy platforms, to discover the various species of monkeys, reptiles, frogs, insects, arachnids as well as the families of Giant Otters and the caiman (a cousin to the alligator). Not to mention the stunning examples of flora throughout the park! Your guide will show you different species of plants and will explain their use in ancestral medicine. You will leave with a deep insight into one of the world's great wildernesses.

Make your own way to Quito Airport this morning for a 30 minute flight over the Andes Mountains to Coca, a bustling oil town on the edge of the Amazon Basin. Upon arrival, enjoy a quick lunch at Sacha Lodge’s private house before heading to the river docks. From here, board private motorised canoes for a 2 hour journey down the Napo River, travelling deep into the jungle. Disembark for a 30 minute guided walk through lush rainforest to Lake Pilchicocha, where local staff await to paddle you across to Sacha Lodge. Arrival is expected in the afternoon. Cool off with a refreshing swim in the blackwater lake, home to a variety of Amazonian wildlife or visit the butterfly house with your naturalist guide to observe some of the hundreds of vibrant species native to the region. After dinner, choose between a night walk to discover the Amazon’s nocturnal wildlife, or a peaceful canoe ride across the lake, where you may spot spectacled or black caimans, their glowing eyes reflecting in the dark water. Note: Exact domestic flight times will be confirmed following booking.

Meals: L,D

Over the next two days, immerse yourself in the extraordinary biodiversity of the Ecuadorian Amazon with a variety of guided activities based from Sacha Lodge. Start your morning early with a buffet breakfast around 6:00–6:30am, before heading out for your first excursion. Return mid-morning for a light snack and leisure time—perhaps a swim in the lake plunge pool, safely enclosed for swimming in the blackwater shallows of Lake Pilchicocha. Lunch is served at 1:00pm, followed by an afternoon outing at 3:00pm. Evenings include a pre-dinner refreshment, dinner at 7:00pm, and a night walk or canoe outing from 8:15pm. Activity Highlights: Canopy Walkway – Walk across a 36m high, 275m long suspension bridge above the jungle canopy, a unique vantage point to spot toucans, parrots and other canopy dwellers. Kapok Tower Climb – Climb the 43m observation tower for 360° panoramic views over the treetops, perfect for birdwatching. Yasuni Parrot Clay Lick (Sundays & Wednesdays only) – Take an early morning canoe ride to witness a vivid spectacle of parrots and parakeets gathering at the clay lick. Butterfly House – Explore one of the Amazon’s largest butterfly breeding facilities, home to nearly 40 native species. Forest Walks – Spot seven species of monkeys including Red Howler, Pygmy Marmoset and Night Monkey, along with sloths, owls, and other elusive forest creatures. Nocturnal Excursions – Armed with flashlights, search for tarantulas, frogs, snakes and camouflaged insects that only emerge at night. Canoe Explorations – Paddle through winding jungle waterways and creeks, surrounded by bird calls and the rustle of monkeys leaping overhead. Caiman Spotting – After dark, glide across the lake to look for caimans, their red eyes glowing in the torchlight. Specialist Birdwatching – With over 600 bird species recorded in the area, Sacha Lodge is a haven for birders. Specialist birding guides are available on request prior to travel. Note: Some activities are seasonal or weather-dependent. A flexible daily schedule is tailored by your naturalist guides.
